Frequently Asked Questions

What is TED?

TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.

Our Mission: Spread ideas

TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. On TED.com, we’re building a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world’s most inspired thinkers — and a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at TED and TEDx events around the world, all year long.

In fact, everything we do — from our TED Talk videos to the projects sparked by the TED Prize, from the global TEDx community to the TED-Ed lesson series — is driven by this goal: How can we best spread great ideas?

TED is owned by a nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation. Our agenda is to make great ideas accessible and spark conversation.

What is TEDx?

The TEDx Program is designed to help communities, organizations and individuals to spark conversation and connection through local TED-like experiences. At TEDx events, a screening of TED Talks videos — or a combination of live presenters and TED Talks videos — sparks deep conversation and connections at the local level. TEDx events are planned and coordinated independently, under a free license granted by TED. Learn about TEDx event types.

I would like to help organize this year’s conference – how do I get involved?

Applications to join our Art & Design, Marketing, Programming, Logistics, Sponsorship and After Party teams are open for the 2016 season. Please email tedxvcu@gmail.com with the subject: TEDxVCU Volunteering.

Is there a fee to attend TEDxVCU?

TEDxVCU is a not-for-profit organization. Our event is run solely by a team of dedicated student volunteers, and money collected from ticket fees is allocated back to the conference to support costs for venue, operations, food, after party & promotional goods. Charging a fee means that TEDxVCU can become a more self-sufficient organization, ensuring that TEDxVCU programming and events can be sustained into the future and that we can continue to reach new and broader audiences. All participants will not be charged a fee for the 2017 Conference.

How long is the event?

The conference is a half day, followed by an after party in the evening. More information on tickets for the after party will be available in Spring 2017.

I am a member of the media. How do I obtain a media pass?

There are only a limited number of media passes available for the conference. For any inquiries, please contact press@tedxvcu.com.

How can my company get involved as a sponsor of TEDxVCU?

Please visit our Partners page for further information. You can email sponsorship@tedxvcu.com with any particular questions.

Who runs TEDxVCU?

TEDxVCU is planned, organized and executed by a group of dedicated and passionate student volunteers at Virginia Commonwealth University.
